Chemical Engineer

POSITION PURPOSE

The mission of the Global Technology Innovation team is to identify and scale-up advanced technologies into commercializable innovations to realize Baltimore Aircoil Company’s (BAC) vision to reinvent cooling to sustain the world. Headquartered in Jessup, MD, the Global Technology Innovation team is a fast-paced, high-energy innovation driver for sustainable industrial and commercial heat rejection, thermal energy storage, thermal management, and carbon capture technologies. We are looking for a curious, humble, and resilient R&D Chemical Engineer to provide essential expertise in chemical engineering fundamentals (kinetics, thermodynamics, transport phenomena), process design, and materials science.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Under general direction, design and lead technology projects to scale-up cutting-edge materials, coatings and coating processes, separation processes, water treatment processes, and related technologies.
• Act as working leader: drive technology project execution, manage project team, schedule, and budget, and communicate with functional leader and executive sponsor(s).
• Design and lead technical analysis and modelling, as well as benchtop experiments to full-scale proof of concept activities in the lab and in the field, both as project lead, and technical contributor on other Technology Innovation team-led projects.
• Identify gaps and opportunities, and define technology challenges, by working with key stakeholders inside and outside of BAC.
• Provide Chemical and/or Materials Engineering expertise to the BAC organization and participate in cross-functional innovation activities’.
• Participate on related industry counsels as needed.

NATURE AND SCOPE

The R&D Chemical Engineer will report to the Global Director, Technology Innovation. As a member of the Global Product and Technology Innovation department, the R&D Chemical Engineer will have frequent interaction with the Core Technology, Support Systems, Advanced Manufacturing Technology, New Product Introduction, and Global and Regional Marketing groups within BAC, and external technology partners outside of BAC. The position will have no direct reports.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, or Chemical, Biochemical, Materials, or related Engineering field required.
• Eight or more years of applicable progressively complex Chemical, Materials, or related Engineering field experience in high-performance R&D organizations required.
• Professional experience in two or more of the following areas: (i) heat and/or mass exchanger design and related disciplines (e.g. heat transfer, fluid flow, coupled heat and mass transfer), (ii) phase change materials, (iii) membranes, (iv) carbon capture and related technologies (e.g. liquid solvents, solid sorbents), (v) energy harvesting and related technologies (e.g. thermoelectric generators, shape-memory alloys), and (vi) water treatment.
• Proven track record of successfully leading the development of relevant technologies from ideation through scale-up, leading to market introduction.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrated experience with one or more of: (i) materials synthesis, (ii) materials optimization, (iii) materials characterization, and (iv) materials longevity and reliability testing and assessment; materials of interest include polymers, minerals, ceramics, metals and composites.
• Proactive in identifying and communicating scope, design, development opportunities and risks, and recommending potential solutions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills; ability to analyze, synthesize, and present results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Excellent interpersonal and follow-through skills, with the ability to take leadership role.
• Enthusiastic team player: willing to participate in a team-oriented environment and to collaborate with team members.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• MS or PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry or other related disciplines.
• Laboratory experience working safely with benchtop processes, fume hood, hazardous materials, and writing Standard Operating Procedures.
• Demonstrated experience with process and equipment scale-up and intensification.
• Experience with chemical process simulation (e.g. ASPEN, COCO) and multi-physics simulation (e.g. COMSOL) programs.

Travel up to 20% of the time.
