The Data Governance and Operations team is one of the five verticals within the newly established Chief Data Office (CDO), part of T. Rowe Price’s Chief Operating Office (COO). The team is responsible for establishing and leading a firm-wide data governance framework across all aspects of T. Rowe Price’s data operations and infrastructure. As a key pillar of the firm’s risk management framework, the team is on the front lines of protecting the franchise, internal and regulatory compliance and driving operational excellence.
The Role
The Director, Data Operations reports to the Head of Data Governance & Operations. As the Director, Data Operations, you will be responsible for managing, mitigating and preventing data incidents and issues, driving continuous improvement and maintaining strong operational health and discipline. Your responsibilities extend across the whole data lifecycle within a federated operating model where operational activities may reside in different parts of the business outside your direct control. As such, building relationships, networks and influencing will be critical capabilities to support converge towards more standardized approaches to data management. You will be a key part of the extended data leadership team responsible for designing and implementing a modern, robust and scalable data management capability across the organization. As a direct manager of a highly skilled team of experts (initially two), you will provide day-to-day management, leadership, coaching and skills development that maximizes opportunities for growth and retention.
Impact
The role is critical to ensuring operational excellence in relation to how we manage data incidents and issues within an environment of continuous improvement. Using your influencing and networking skills to build key partnerships across the organization, the role will reach across the organization, working closely with colleagues and leaders in other teams who have a variety of data management accountabilities. With regular exposure to senior management, your skills in communications, synthesizing complex information, strategic thinking and execution excellence will ensure your work is high profile and impactful.
Key Accountabilities
Management of direct reports in the Data Operations team including coaching, performance management and setting / monitoring objectives.
Root cause analysis and diagnostics of data incidents and issues to provide a clear, fact-based assessment of the situation and causes on which to develop responses and solutions.
Problem solving and solutioning for the remediation of data incidents and issues in a way that aligns to the CDO data governance principles and engages the relevant experts across the organization.
Lead continuous improvement efforts within the Data Operations team to drive operational excellence within the CDO and influence change across the organization.
Manage and oversee Data Operations projects and initiatives.
Participate in relevant operational and governance forums representing CDO Data Operations.
Partner with Data Governance colleagues to operationalize the Data Governance and Operations framework and principles.
Define clear accountabilities, role and responsibilities around data governance and operations across data teams and the wider organization.
Evangelize critical initiatives and adoption of new ways of working through a range of different channels and engagement approaches.
Develop operational metrics, KPIs, SLAs and OKRs as appropriate to establish a robust and action-oriented operational measurement framework for data.
Collaborate with Risk and Technology teams to ensure consistency and standardization in frameworks, processes and tools.
Provide transparency around operational hygiene through regular reporting and taking a proactive approach to sharing information.
Experience & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
12+ years of total relevant work experience ideally including data management
5+ years people management experience
A thorough understanding of data governance principles, frameworks and methodologies, and experience applying them in the real world all stages of the data lifecycle.
Execution excellence and a track record of delivering long term business value
Strong risk management awareness and understanding
A sound understanding of financial markets
Proven track record of attracting, hiring and retaining talent
Ability to think and plan strategically, working in ambiguous environments
Strong analytical skills and the ability to aggregate and simplify complex, disparate information
Experience navigating complex, global organizations
Strong written and oral communications skills with experience presenting and influencing at C-suite level

Preferred Requirements
Master’s degree or MBA
In-depth understanding of asset management industry
Experience leading and working in Agile environments, ideally at scale but with the ability to flex as needed e.g., waterfall
Lean Six Sigma or related skills and experience
Some, but not necessarily all of the following:
Data architecture, information management, conceptual data modelling, and ontologies.
Data condition/quality assessment and remediation.
Data warehousing and data operations.
Data valuation and working with data as an asset.
Experience developing and managing data sharing agreements.
Data ethics and privacy.
Cybersecurity risk assessment for data systems and processes, and knowledge of relevant standards and regulations such as ISO27001, 27002, NIST, NIS-D.
Metadata, reference data and master data management.
Change management, using established frameworks
