Seaspan Seeking Intern, Innovation for immediate hire. Accepting applications from all groups. Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS-related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

The Intern, Innovation will work alongside Innovation managers and engineers to explore and develop solutions in technology areas tailored to the skills and qualifications of the applicant. In your role, you would bring an active interest and experience in developing practical and novel solutions to real-world problems in ONE of the following areas of active investigation:

• Marine electrification, alternative and zero-emissions fuels and propulsion systems
• IOT sensor systems in manufacturing or vessel equipment monitoring
• Manufacturing information and process automation and robotics
• LLM/NLP approaches for information extraction and management

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you’ll do

The successful applicant for this position will provide day-to-day support to managers and engineers while assisting and coordinating specific activities, including:

• Be working across multiple disciplines and technologies within the shipyard or with Innovation partners.
• Take ownership and initiative in the development and demonstration of selected technologies and applications (e.g. as a case study or pilot study)
• Perform various innovative engineering activities such as research, coding, testing, and evaluations of your project
• Coordinate and schedule activities to procure and manage Innovation technology assets
• Capture and communicate the solution, progress and outcomes using demonstrations, presentations, and reports
• Lead and facilitate meetings, updates, and other demonstration activities with team members and senior staff.
• Engaging with the wider team, stakeholders and other departments to manage progress and align the project’s vision.

What you’ll bring

• Enrollment in a 3rd or 4th year Engineering degree program.
• Students applying should have a strong curiosity about marine and vessel applications for digitization and Artificial Intelligence, green technologies, ship design, manufacturing or operations.
• Experience working with one or more of the following:
  • Digital information systems, digital twins and/or simulation environments
  • Zero-emissions and alternative fuel systems and energy storage systems
  • Propulsion systems and operational vessel energy efficiency
  • CAD or manufacturing information systems and data management
  • Material or equipment tracking or performance monitoring technologies
  • LLM/NLP application development using generative AI or other approaches
• Working knowledge of Canada’s and the UN’s climate goals and sustainability would be an asset
• Experience with CAD, scripting, and software development would be an asset
• Experience in conducting technical investigations with strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills including technical report writing.
• Ability to work independently with minimal direction and manage their time optimally
• Demonstrated troubleshooting skills and working through the technology adoption process
• Demonstrated technical knowledge and engineering skills through exposure to industry experience, class projects or co-op terms.
• Excellent proficiencies using Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint and other applications

Seaspan’s Internships are 4 months in duration. We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
