Materials Engineering Manager

We are looking for a Materials Engineering Manager to join our team. This position will work within the Corporate Quality Team for Worthington Industries Pressure Cylinders supporting all Pressure Cylinder facilities globally. The position will be responsible for Metallurgical/Quality oversight of material supplied (Steel

Aluminum

Brass

Composites

etc.) to be used in the Cylinder Manufacturing Process. The position will help set policy and direction regarding Material Supplier selection and development. Position works closely with WI Material Labs

Purchasing

Engineering

Supply base and Supply chain to assure quality materials are utilized for Pressure Cylinder components. Position will have management supervision of Material Science Engineers to support the Material Technical Service Team. Position requires up to 30% travel to Pressure Cylinder facilities and Material Suppliers/Processors.

Responsibilities

• Manage

  direct

  train

  and develop Material Science Engineering staff to accomplish Material Technical Services teams identified function and responsibilities

• Develop Material Suppliers with support of Worthington Cylinder Purchasing group to establish best materials for cylinder applications and establish secondary Suppliers to mitigate risk. Provide direction to Purchasing related to best selection of Material Suppliers.
• Provide support for various material trials (Production Part Approval Process – PPAP) at Worthington Pressure Cylinder facilities

  and document within Quality Systems.

• Maintain and oversee the material specifications of supplied materials for Worthington Cylinders applications. Assure they are maintained and current.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with Corporate Materials and Technical Services Labs understanding their full capabilities to support various Pressure Cylinders material related items. Coordinate material lab submissions and evaluations as needed.
• Examine and review opportunities for material cost reduction projects related to materials and cylinder manufacturing processes

  and institute trials to validate.

• Conduct research to improve materials for cylinder applications through process or product development.
• Provide Cylinder facility Quality/Operations support related to material quality issues

  process optimization

  etc. Assure all material quality non-conformances are documented in Quality Systems.

Desired Experience

• B.S. degree in Materials Science or equivalent with a minimum of 15 years of work experience. Steel Industry experience is preferred.
• Continuous improvement/operations/management/engineering experience
• Excellent communication (both written and verbal)

  teamwork and interpersonal skills

  including the ability to communicate technical concepts to all levels of the organization

• Good understanding of material testing techniques (Mechanical

  Hardness

  Microanalysis

  SEM

  etc.)

• Fluency in computer statistical analysis

  analytics

  and reporting tools along with an understanding of computer systems and data bases

• Knowledge of various materials (Aluminum

  Brass

  Carbon Fiber

  Composites

  Lubricants

  etc.) a plus
